The First Ronald McDonald House
In 1973, Philadelphia Eagles football player Fred Hill and his wife, Fran, learned that their daughter, Kim, had leukemia. While traveling to Philadelphia for Kim’s treatments at the children’s hospital, they noticed other families who had children in the same situation. These families drove hours to the hospital to be with their children, sleeping overnight in waiting room chairs and eating from vending machines because they had no place else to go.
Fred Hill and his football team decided to build these families a “home away from home” in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Eagles partnered with local McDonald’s owners/operators to purchase and restore a house near the hospital where the families could stay. The house became the first Ronald McDonald House. Today 300 Houses exist worldwide, including ours here in Greenville, North Carolina!
The Greenville Ronald McDonald House
The Greenville Ronald McDonald House opened its doors on Father’s Day in 1987. Families staying at the Ronald McDonald House can sleep in a warm Select Comfort Sleep Number bed, take a shower in their private bathroom, do laundry, and prepare and eat meals in a spacious, cheerful kitchen. They have access to a comfortable family room, a media/game room, a children’s playroom, a sunroom, a relaxing patio, and well-kept grounds. More importantly, families find the support of others who share the experience of having a very ill child. raised remains in the Greenville Ronald McDonald House.
